More than 500 students were evacuated from East Maitland Public School this afternoon following reports of a gas smell near the campus.
Emergency services were called to the Williams Street school at about 2.10pm on Thursday, where staff quickly moved students out of classrooms as a precaution.
Police assisted in managing the evacuation and ensured students were safely collected and sent home early.
A gas company attended the scene and is investigating the source of the odour, which has not yet been identified.
No injuries have been reported. Authorities say inquiries are ongoing.
