A major rail shutdown is planned across parts of the Hunter region this weekend as essential maintenance and upgrade works are carried out on key sections of the freight and passenger network.

The works are scheduled to begin on Saturday 16 May 2026, with the main shutdown period running through the weekend and continuing into Monday 18 May 2026. Some additional maintenance activity is expected to extend until Tuesday 19 May 2026, depending on the section of track.

The closure will affect sections of the rail corridor between Telarah and parts of the broader Hunter and North Coast network, with additional works also scheduled on connecting lines including areas toward the Upper Hunter.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation says the shutdown is necessary to complete a range of infrastructure upgrades, including track replacement, signalling improvements, bridge maintenance and level crossing works. Officials say the works are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety, reliability and long-term performance across the network.

More than 100 work sites are expected to be active during the shutdown period, with crews working intensively to complete the scheduled maintenance within the possession window.

Train services across the region will be disrupted, with some NSW TrainLink services replaced by buses and coaches. Passengers are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

Road users are also being advised to expect delays near level crossings and work zones due to increased contractor activity and temporary traffic changes.

Rail authorities say while the shutdown will cause inconvenience, the works are essential to maintaining the safety and efficiency of one of NSW’s busiest freight corridors.
