A tobacco shop in New Lambton has been left damaged after a fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning, with firefighters responding to reports of smoke issuing from the building.

About 2:20am on 18 May 2026, crews from Lambton and Newcastle fire stations were called to a business on Alma Road after smoke was seen coming from the premises.

On arrival, firefighters found smoke issuing from the roof and roller door of the tobacco shop. Crews forced entry using a power saw and quickly located a small electrical fire inside, which was extinguished before it could spread further.

The fire caused smoke and water damage throughout the business. Alma Road was temporarily closed while emergency crews worked to secure the scene.

Fire and Rescue NSW has reminded the public to remain vigilant with electrical equipment, warning that overloaded power boards and unattended charging devices remain a common cause of preventable fires.

Officials are urging both homes and businesses to ensure electrical devices are not left charging unattended and that power boards are not overloaded.
