Division Deepens Over Maitland ‘Jocko’ Landmark
A heated debate has erupted within Maitland City Council over the future of the historic Jocko Graves Hitching Post, with Labor councillors voicing strong objections to its recognition.
During the latest council meeting, a proposal to create an online resource detailing the history of the High Street landmark—believed to be more than 150 years old—was met with resistance from Labor representatives.
Cr Ferris told the chamber he “hates everything about Jocko,” while other Labor councillors raised concerns about the site’s significance and interpretation.
One councillor described the landmark as “problematic” and argued it should not be considered heritage, while another labelled it a “racist character,” questioning whether it should be promoted at all.
Despite the objections, the recommendation to document the site’s history was carried, with Liberal and Independent councillors voting in favour.
Supporters of the motion say the initiative is about preserving and presenting Maitland’s history, while critics argue certain aspects of the past must be carefully examined in a modern context.
The online resource is expected to proceed, with further details yet to be announced.
