Maitland Councils 7.25% rate increase is unacceptable during a pandemic

Maitland Mayor Baker will be remembered for her heartless rate rise during a pandemic which will cause more financial stress on family’s across the City of Maitland who are already doing it tough.

ALP and Liberal Councillors all voted to rise rates by a huge 7.25% whilst allocating funds to the struggling art gallery which has a shortfall of $32,000 per week. Mayor Baker said the arts gallery was vitial for tourism.

Deputy Mayor Penfold opposed the rate rise along with other independent councillors, unfortunately they were out voted.

ALP councillor Ferris called it a “populous ploy” when Deputy Mayor Penfold opposed Mayor Baker’s position to impose a 7.25% rate rise.

Deputy Mayor Penfold said “The gallery is a great facility, though council need to be mindful that it’s spending other people’s money.”

Speak out and let Mayor Baker know you disapprove of her huge rate rise and to find another way to fund the failing art gallery.
