Federal MP Dan Repacholi has confirmed that the homeless encampment at HJ Sternbeck Park, Cessnock, will be cleared following repeated offers of assistance that were declined by those living there.
Over six weeks ago, MP Repacholi reached out to the group to provide access to housing, health, and social support services, but the residents reportedly chose not to engage.
The situation was complicated by the park’s ownership. Although managed by Cessnock Council, the land is held on behalf of Telstra. After contacting Telstra directly, the company instructed NSW Police and the council to remove the camp and said it was surprised not to have been notified earlier.
Police have been responding to reports from the public, though many complaints lacked formal statements, limiting their ability to act beyond welfare checks.
MP Repacholi said he hopes those affected will take up the offers of help and housing support that remain available. He acknowledged that homelessness is a complex human issue, emphasizing the need to keep public spaces safe while continuing to offer support to those in need.
