Patients are expected to begin receiving care in the new acute services building at John Hunter Hospital later this year, marking a major milestone in the region’s largest healthcare redevelopment.

During a tour of the new facility today, Castlereagh MP Yasmine Catley described the expansion as “extraordinary”, highlighting the significant boost it will provide to healthcare services across the Hunter.

The $890 million redevelopment features a new emergency department, 22 operating theatres, modern birthing suites, a neonatal intensive care unit, a rooftop helipad and more than 900 additional car parking spaces.

The project is the largest hospital redevelopment undertaken outside Sydney in decades and is designed to meet the growing healthcare needs of the Hunter and surrounding regions.

Ms Catley said John Hunter Hospital is where the region turns “when it matters most” and said the redevelopment would deliver world-class healthcare closer to home for local families.
