A police officer has been charged in connection with an alleged wounding incident during an arrest on the Mid North Coast last year.
On 21 June 2023, around 4 p.m., officers arrested a 17-year-old boy near the intersection of Vernon and Duke Street in Coffs Harbour over an outstanding warrant. The case involving the teenager was subsequently addressed in a Children’s Court.
In September 2023, an investigation was launched by the Northern Region Command following allegations of assault during the arrest.
As a result of the inquiry, a 26-year-old senior constable from the Northern Region Command was issued a future court attendance notice on Tuesday, 29 October 2024, for reckless wounding. The officer is scheduled to appear in Coffs Harbour Local Court on 11 December 2024.
Police will allege the officer struck the teenager twice in the head with a radio while handcuffing him. The officer’s employment status is currently under review.
