A 35-year-old man has been charged after allegedly attacking police with a large knife following a pursuit through Sydney’s southwest on Friday afternoon.

Police say officers were conducting patrols in Mount Pritchard about 2.20pm when they attempted to stop a Volkswagen hatchback on Meadows Road for a roadside breath test.

The driver allegedly failed to stop, prompting a police pursuit.

During the pursuit, the vehicle reportedly became caught in traffic, allowing officers to approach. However, police allege the driver reversed away and continued along Pritchard Street before the pursuit resumed.

The chase came to an end on Meadows Road, where officers forced entry into the vehicle to arrest the driver.

During the arrest, the man allegedly produced a large knife and attempted to attack police. Officers were able to secure the weapon and take him into custody.

One police officer suffered minor injuries during the incident but did not require hospital treatment.

The man was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with multiple offences, including reckless police pursuit, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, assaulting a person to resist arrest, possessing a knife in a public place, possessing suspected stolen goods in a vehicle, and possessing a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Bail Division Local Court 6 on Saturday.
