‘Out of Control’: Teen Charged After Alleged Rampage Through a Hunter Council

A 17-year-old boy has been refused bail after police alleged he embarked on a destructive overnight crime spree in Muswellbrook that included the robbery of a bottle shop, a break-in at a council building, the theft of a council vehicle and extensive property damage.

Police allege that about 10pm on Friday, 22 May, the teenager and two other people assaulted a staff member at a bottle shop on Maitland Street before stealing alcohol. The 46-year-old employee was not physically injured during the incident.

Just hours later, police allege the teenager broke into a council building on Maitland Street about 1.30am on Saturday, stealing keys to a Nissan Navara before driving the vehicle away.

Investigators further allege that about 3am, the teenager returned to the council facility with two other young people, where furniture, electrical equipment and another vehicle were damaged before the group fled the scene.

At about 5.30am, emergency services were called to Beech Street after the stolen Nissan Navara was discovered on fire.

Following investigations by officers attached to the Hunter Valley Police District, a 17-year-old boy was arrested at Muswellbrook Police Station about 12.15pm on Monday.

He was charged with 10 offences, including robbery in company, break and enter, stealing a motor vehicle, multiple property damage offences and destroying property by fire.

The teenager was refused bail and appeared before a Children’s Court on Tuesday.

A 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, who police allege were involved in the incident at the council building, will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.

Police investigations remain ongoing.
