In a heartbreaking and deeply disturbing case that has sparked widespread community outrage, a 21-year-old man has been charged following the death of a puppy in Newcastle’s north.
The incident occurred around 4:20pm on Sunday (20 July), when witnesses say the man pulled over in a carpark on Maitland Road, Sandgate, and removed a young dog from his vehicle.
According to reports made to police, the man allegedly struck the puppy against the side of the car multiple times before throwing it to the ground. It’s believed the alleged assault continued before the puppy was placed back in the vehicle.
The matter was quickly reported to police, prompting officers from Newcastle City Police District to launch an immediate investigation.
Later that evening, around 9:05pm, Port Stephens-Hunter Police officers arrested the man at a residence in Lemon Tree Passage. During the arrest, officers seized several items for forensic examination, including clothing, a car seat cover, and a mobile phone.
Tragically, a deceased puppy was found a short time later on Porowei Way, Kooragang, believed to be the same animal involved in the incident. The body will be examined by a veterinarian as investigations continue.
The 21-year-old was taken to Nelson Bay Police Station, where he was charged with:
- Aggravated cruelty upon an animal
- Torture and serious injury of an animal
He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Bail Court Division 2 today (Monday, 21 July).
⚖️ Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities have confirmed that further forensic testing will be conducted.
