Police Target E-Bike Safety on Fernleigh Track
Police have conducted a high-visibility operation along popular shared pathways in the Lake Macquarie area, focusing on e-bike safety and rider behaviour.
Between 10am and 8pm on Saturday, 14 March 2026, officers carried out patrols along the Fernleigh Track and other shared pathways between Belmont and Speers Point.
Police patrolled both on foot and using e-bikes, speaking with more than 80 young people about e-bike safety and the legal requirements for riding on shared pathways.
Authorities said most riders and pathway users were considerate of others. However, one infringement notice was issued, while 12 other riders were dealt with under the Young Offenders Act for offences including failing to wear a helmet and using a mobile phone while riding.
Lake Macquarie Police District said similar operations will continue in the future as part of ongoing efforts to educate riders and improve safety for everyone using shared pathways.
