Emergency services have provided a significant update following yesterday’s large structure fire at Mayfield in Newcastle.

The blaze broke out around 3.30pm on Monday (18 May 2026) at the corner of Denison Street and Maitland Road, prompting a large-scale emergency response from Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Police and other agencies.

Authorities have confirmed evacuation orders have now been revised after initially affecting around 30 nearby homes. Most residents have since been allowed to return, however four properties on Denison Street remain under evacuation orders while safety assessments continue.

Firefighters have contained the blaze, which is still being monitored by Fire and Rescue NSW crews. Officials say the fire response remains active, with a small amount of smoke continuing to come from the site. Residents in surrounding areas are being urged to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

Denison Street remains closed between Maitland Road and Waratah Street for both vehicles and pedestrians, while Maitland Road has reopened. Motorists are being urged to slow down and exercise caution near emergency crews working in the area.

Residents affected by the ongoing evacuation orders are working with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and the NSW Department of Communities and Justice. Anyone who finds potentially contaminated material is being advised not to touch it and to contact the EPA on 131 555.

Initial inquiries indicate the fire is not being treated as suspicious, however investigations are continuing.
