A major coordinated operation will take place tomorrow at the decommissioned Liddell Power Station, where two chimney stacks will be brought down in a controlled explosion as part of ongoing site decommissioning works.
The Hunter Valley Police District, working alongside Transport for NSW and SafeWork NSW, will support the operation in conjunction with NSW Police Force and contractor AGL Energy.
Police resources, including Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and Marine Area Command, will be deployed from 8:00am under user-pays arrangements to manage safety and traffic control around the blast zone.
Authorities have confirmed there will be no public viewing areas for the demolition. The event will instead be livestreamed.
Hebden Road will be closed from 7:00am and restricted to local traffic only, while the Lake Liddell Recreation Area will also be shut for the duration of the operation.
The New England Highway will face temporary closures immediately prior to the detonation window, which is scheduled between 9:00am and 1:30pm, subject to weather and safety conditions.
Traffic will be stopped for approximately 20 minutes at Thomas Mitchell Drive to the north and Lemington Road to the south, with vehicles held between those points before being released once conditions allow.
Once the controlled blast is completed and the area is declared safe, the highway is expected to reopen within minutes.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead and monitor updates via Live Traffic NSW.
Officials emphasised the demolition is part of the broader closure and rehabilitation process of the former coal-fired power station, which is being undertaken as an industrial safety operation rather than a public event.
