Man Charged in Connection to Newcastle Arson Attack; Victim Sustains Severe Burns
Newcastle, 16th October 2023: Authorities have made significant headway in the investigation of a shocking incident that occurred in the early hours of 28th September 2023, on King Street. A 23-year-old man sustained severe burns after being assaulted and set alight at a local fast-food restaurant. Prompt response from emergency services led to his transfer to John Hunter Hospital and subsequently to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Under the direction of Strike Force Droney, detectives from the Newcastle City Police District launched a thorough investigation. On 29th September, a 20-year-old suspect was apprehended at Raymond Terrace Police Station. Following ongoing inquiries, a second arrest was made on 13th October at a residence on Hope Street, Rosehill. The 30-year-old individual was subsequently charged with causing grievous bodily harm and employing an explosive device with the intent to maim or cause serious harm.
Presented before the Parramatta Local Court on 14th October 2023, the accused was denied bail and is set to appear before the Newcastle Local Court on 6th December 2023.
