Families are heartbroken after multiple graves were allegedly vandalised at Sedgefield Cemetery in the Hunter region, with at least seven graves reported damaged.

One local family says they were devastated to discover the grave of their parents had been severely vandalised, describing the damage as “heartbreaking”.

According to the family, the headstone was smashed into three pieces and the memorial plaque broken in two.

The grave belonged to a World War II veteran who served on active duty in New Guinea, and his wife who served in the Australian Land Army during the war. Their military service was recognised on the headstone.

In a statement, the family said their parents had spent decades supporting the local community and were well known and respected throughout the area.

“Our parents deserved dignity and respect in their final resting place. We are heartbroken that this has been taken from them,” the family said.

The family also extended their support to the relatives of the other graves damaged during the incident.

“We also extend our sincere sympathy and support to the families of the seven other graves that were damaged,” the statement read.

“No family should have to witness the desecration of the final resting place of their loved ones.”

The family is now urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity at the cemetery or who may have information about the vandalism to come forward.

Police have not yet released further details regarding the incident.
