A Newcastle man has been charged after allegedly launching a shocking attack on a young woman in a wheelchair over the weekend.
Police say around 2.20am on Saturday, officers rushed to a hotel on King Street, Newcastle West, after reports that a man had ripped a wheel off a woman’s wheelchair, sending her crashing to the ground.
The victim — a 23-year-old woman who lives with hearing and sight impairments — suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
After an urgent police investigation, officers arrested a 23-year-old man at a home on Turton Road, New Lambton, around 6.50pm Sunday. He was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The man has been released on strict conditional bail and is due to face Newcastle Local Court on November 13.
Police described the alleged assault as “disturbing” and are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
