A horrific and violent assault in Coffs Harbour has left a 59-year-old man fighting for his life after his hand was severed during an early morning attack.
Emergency services were called to a home on Toormina Place just before 6:45am on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, following reports that a man had suffered catastrophic injuries during an alleged assault.
When NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the man with his left hand completely severed. He was treated on-site for significant blood loss and trauma before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. Police say he is now in a serious but stable condition.
Two women, aged 58 and 80, were also inside the property at the time of the attack. Fortunately, neither was physically injured during the shocking incident.
According to police from the Coffs/Clarence Police District, initial inquiries suggest that two men entered the property and assaulted the victim. One of the attackers is believed to be known to the man. The pair fled the scene before officers arrived.
A crime scene was established shortly after the assault, with forensic teams spending several hours collecting evidence. The circumstances surrounding the attack are under active investigation, with detectives now appealing for public assistance.
Police have urged anyone who was in the Toormina Place area around the time of the assault to come forward, especially if they have dashcam footage or mobile phone recordings that could assist investigators.
“This was an extremely violent incident with life-altering consequences for the victim,” a police spokesperson said. “We’re appealing to the public to help us identify and locate those responsible. Even the smallest detail could be vital.”
The nature of the injury and the level of violence involved has shocked the local community, with many residents expressing concern over the escalating brutality of local crime.
