Man Faces Court for Serious Domestic and Traffic Offenses on Mid North Coast
Mid North Coast, June 24, 2023: A man will face court tomorrow after being charged with a series of alleged serious domestic and traffic-related offenses in the state’s Mid North Coast region. The charges stem from incidents that took place over several months, involving assault, kidnapping, police evasion, and other offenses.
The investigation began in March 2023 when Port Stephens-Hunter Police District initiated inquiries into an alleged assault on a woman by a known individual at Upper Allyn. After the 37-year-old suspect could not be located, a warrant was issued for his arrest, prompting an intensified search.
On June 2, 2023, police received a call from John Hunter Hospital reporting a woman with severe injuries, which required surgery. Further investigation revealed that the woman had allegedly been kidnapped by the man six weeks prior and held against her will.
The situation escalated on June 3, 2023, when the suspect allegedly assaulted officers during an attempted arrest. He then fled the scene in a Jeep Cherokee, towing a camper trailer. A police pursuit was initiated when the suspect failed to stop as directed on Kendall Street in Bellbird. However, due to safety concerns, the pursuit was terminated after the suspect evaded road spikes and crashed the vehicle into a tree, causing the trailer to detach.
Yesterday, June 23, 2023, an off-duty officer spotted the man allegedly driving a stolen Toyota Landcruiser on the New England Highway in East Maitland. The officer followed the suspect to the carpark of Metford Railway Station, where police approached him. The suspect is accused of ramming two police vehicles before rolling the Landcruiser. Two passengers in the vehicle sustained minor injuries.
Following the incident, the man was apprehended and taken to Maitland Police Station for assessment. He was later released from the hospital and returned to the police station, where he was charged with twenty-three offenses, including assault, kidnapping, evading police, property damage, and various other charges.
The 37-year-old Maitland man was denied bail and is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday, June 25, 2023. Two senior constables, both male officers, suffered minor injuries during the arrest.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
