Newcastle Council has sparked backlash over a proposal to slash the speed limit on part of Minmi Road to 40 km/h — despite most community submissions opposing the change.
The move is the latest in a string of so-called “safety upgrades” that have seen suburban roads across the Hunter reduced to 30 or 40 km/h.
Critics say the change will do little to improve safety and instead create more congestion, arguing the best way to keep motorists safe is to keep traffic flowing.
Councillor Callum Pull has vowed to fight the proposal, saying he is “staunchly opposed” to the change, but warned it will take majority support in the chamber to stop it from going ahead.
