Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a 37-year-old man following the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in Newcastle earlier this month.
Police say the girl was approached by an unknown man about 1.30am on Friday 15 August while waiting at Hamilton Train Station. It’s alleged the man followed her from the station before sexually assaulting her on Fern Street, Islington.
The teenager was taken to hospital for assessment, and Strike Force Keyneton was established by the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad.
Yesterday morning (25 August), detectives – with help from the Raptor Squad – executed a search warrant at a Thornton home. Clothing, a backpack, and an electronic device were seized, and a 37-year-old man was arrested.
He was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with sexual intercourse with a child between 14 and 16, as well as failing to comply with a digital evidence access order.
The man was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Local Court 2 today (Tuesday 26 August).
