URGENT NSW HEALTH WARNING: DEADLY HIGH-DOSE MDMA FOUND IN CIRCULATION

NSW Health has issued a major public alert after dangerously high-dose MDMA pills and ketamine-like substances were detected at a popular NSW music festival — and officials fear these drugs are still circulating across the state.

The alarming discovery was made during the NSW Government’s drug checking trial at the Strawberry Fields festival in Tocumwal last weekend. While no patrons were hospitalised, testers uncovered MDMA tablets and capsules containing far higher doses than normally seen, prompting an official drug warning.

Authorities also detected ketamine analogues in white powder and crystalline substances — chemicals that mimic ketamine but can cause stronger hallucinations, dissociation, seizures and heart complications.

NSW Health says both substances may still be out there and warns festivalgoers attending the Hypersonic event at Sydney Showground this Saturday to be extra cautious, with drug checking available onsite.

🔥 “High doses of MDMA can cause severe agitation, dangerous overheating, seizures, irregular heart rhythm — even death,” said NSW Health addiction specialist Dr Hester Wilson.

With temperatures expected to soar into the 30s, officials say the risk of MDMA-related harm increases dramatically, especially when combined with alcohol, amphetamines, cocaine or taken in large amounts.

Ketamine-like substances are also extremely dangerous when mixed with alcohol, GHB, opioids or stimulants.

💬 Dr Wilson urged: “If you or a friend feels unwell after taking drugs, you will NOT get in trouble for seeking help. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

Festivalgoers are reminded to stay hydrated, rest, seek shade and reach out to onsite medical teams or DanceWize NSW volunteers if needed.
