The Hunter community is mourning the loss of Douglas “Dougie” Styles, a highly respected emergency services volunteer whose decades of dedicated service touched countless lives across the region.

VRA Rescue NSW – Cessnock/Kurri Kurri has announced the passing of Mr Styles, a Life Member whose commitment to helping others spanned almost four decades.

Doug joined the Cessnock District Rescue Squad in 1987 and quickly became a valued and respected member of the organisation. During his time with the squad, he served in several leadership roles, including Deputy Captain, and spent many years as President, helping guide and support generations of volunteers.

Throughout his service, Doug responded to numerous major incidents, including the aftermath of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake. He also assisted communities during significant flood and bushfire emergencies, consistently stepping forward in times of need.

His dedication to emergency services extended well beyond the rescue squad. Doug was actively involved with Mines Rescue and devoted an extraordinary 45 years of service to St John Ambulance NSW. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, he was admitted as a Member of the Order of St John (MStJ).

Doug was also widely recognised as a meticulous and highly respected first aid instructor. Known for his patience, attention to detail and commitment to high standards, he trained and mentored countless first aiders and emergency responders throughout his career.

In a statement, VRA Rescue NSW – Cessnock/Kurri Kurri described Doug’s legacy as one of “selfless service, leadership and education”, saying he would be remembered as a dedicated rescuer, respected leader, gifted instructor and a man who cared deeply for others.

Funeral details will be announced at a later date. Current and former VRA members have been invited to participate in a Guard of Honour to celebrate Doug’s remarkable life and service.
