Emergency crews have assisted in the rescue of a woman who injured her ankle after slipping while walking in the Newbys Caves area of Lansdowne Forest, near Taree.

The Taree VRA Rescue Squad was activated at about 11:05am today to assist NSW Ambulance with the retrieval. On arrival, operators found the woman had sustained an ankle injury after a fall while bushwalking with friends.

Her companions had already applied a makeshift splint and stabilised the injured limb before rescuers reached the scene.

Rescue operators conducted an initial patient assessment before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and provided pain relief.

Due to the terrain, rescuers used a Terra Tamer litter wheel to safely extricate the woman from the forest track.

She was then transferred into the care of ambulance paramedics for further treatment.
