A woman is in hospital with gunshot injuries and two people are in custody following an alleged shooting in Maitland overnight.

About 11.40pm on Wednesday 1 July 2026, police were called after reports a 31-year-old woman had presented to hospital with gunshot wounds.

Officers attached to the Port Stephens–Hunter Police District were told the woman had been at a home on Alliance Street, East Maitland, when an argument allegedly broke out between her and the occupants.

Police will allege a 55-year-old man produced a shortened shotgun and shot the woman before she fled the property.

The woman was then driven to Maitland Hospital before being transferred to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment to injuries to her head, neck and shoulder. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Following inquiries, police attended the Alliance Street home and arrested a 55-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman. Both were taken to Maitland Police Station.

A crime scene has been established and investigations are continuing.
