Muswellbrook, NSW – A young life was tragically cut short on Saturday afternoon when a 17-year-old rider lost control of his Yamaha YZ250 trail bike at the intersection of Maitland Street and Thompson Street in Muswellbrook. The accident also left the rider’s 22-year-old pillion passenger in critical condition.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 5:00 PM on December 9th, 2023. The rider lost control of the motorbike, causing both him and his passenger to be thrown from the vehicle. The bike then struck a median-strip guard rail.
NSW Ambulance paramedics promptly responded to the scene and provided initial treatment to both victims. The rider was transported to Muswellbrook Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The pillion passenger also received medical attention at Muswellbrook Hospital before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment and surgery. As of now, she remains in critical but stable condition.
The driver of a grey Isuzu D-Max, who had been entering the intersection on a green light at the time of the accident, stopped to offer assistance. He tested negative for alcohol at the scene and was taken to Muswellbrook Hospital for mandatory testing.
Police have established a crime scene and are diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. A report detailing the incident will be prepared for the Coroner.
