Businesses and community groups are being invited to share their ideas to help activate Newcastle’s City Centre and Darby Street precincts, with applications now open for a share of $880,000 in funding.
The City of Newcastle’s 2026 Special Business Rates (SBR) program aims to support projects that drive local economic growth, improve streetscapes and deliver promotional initiatives that attract visitors and support local businesses.
The funding has previously helped bring major community events back to life, including the Darby Street Festival, which received $100,000 through an earlier grant round.
The festival returned in 2025, attracting more than 12,500 visitors, with organisers reporting strong support from local traders. A survey of participating businesses found 100 per cent wanted to be involved in future festivals.
The City of Newcastle is encouraging previous grant recipients, as well as new applicants with ideas to increase economic activity and vibrancy, to apply for the 2026 program.
Applications are now open for projects aimed at creating stronger, more active commercial precincts across Newcastle.
I can also make it more of a local news style with a stronger headline and community angle if you want it for MHV News.
