A 33-year-old man has been charged after police allege he assaulted members of the public, police and frontline emergency workers following a crash at Kotara.
Emergency services were called to Charlestown Road about 8.10pm on Wednesday after reports a ute had crashed into a parked vehicle, gone through a home’s fence and struck a tree.
Police allege several people who stopped to help the driver were assaulted.
A police officer and police dog from the Dog Unit were also allegedly assaulted after arriving at the scene.
The man was arrested with assistance from firefighters and paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard.
A senior constable was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for facial lacerations.
The man was later charged with seven offences, including alleged assaults on police and a frontline emergency worker, dangerous driving, hindering police, failing to provide details to another driver and affray.
He was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 2 today.
