A pedestrian has died following a crash in Sandgate, near Newcastle, on Monday morning.
About 9.10am (Monday 25 May 2026), emergency services were called to Maitland Road, Sandgate, after reports a pedestrian had been struck by a truck.
Officers from the Newcastle City Police District attended the scene, where they were told the pedestrian was hit by a heavy vehicle.
The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition. He later died in hospital. He is yet to be formally identified.
The truck driver, a 42-year-old man, was not physically injured but was also taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.
A crime scene has been established and investigations into the circumstances of the crash are continuing.
Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A major coordinated operation will take place tomorrow at the decommissioned Liddell Power Station, where two chimney stacks will be brought down in a controlled explosion as part of ongoing site decommissioning works.
The Hunter Valley Police District, working alongside Transport for NSW and SafeWork NSW, will support the operation in conjunction with NSW Police Force and contractor AGL Energy.
Police resources, including Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and Marine Area Command, will be deployed from 8:00am under user-pays arrangements to manage safety and traffic control around the blast zone.
Authorities have confirmed there will be no public viewing areas for the demolition. The event will instead be livestreamed.
Hebden Road will be closed from 7:00am and restricted to local traffic only, while the Lake Liddell Recreation Area will also be shut for the duration of the operation.
The New England Highway will face temporary closures immediately prior to the detonation window, which is scheduled between 9:00am and 1:30pm, subject to weather and safety conditions.
Traffic will be stopped for approximately 20 minutes at Thomas Mitchell Drive to the north and Lemington Road to the south, with vehicles held between those points before being released once conditions allow.
Once the controlled blast is completed and the area is declared safe, the highway is expected to reopen within minutes.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead and monitor updates via Live Traffic NSW.
Officials emphasised the demolition is part of the broader closure and rehabilitation process of the former coal-fired power station, which is being undertaken as an industrial safety operation rather than a public event.
Around 9.30am on Friday 22 May, emergency services responded to reports of a child struck by a vehicle at Terrigal on the Central Coast.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance, with paramedics treating the child at the scene alongside the helicopter’s critical care medical team.
The child sustained facial and other injuries before being airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for further treatment.
A historic general store and adjoining residential building have been destroyed by a major fire at Menangle in the Wollondilly region overnight.
Firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW responded to the blaze on Station Street, with more than 15 fire trucks required to bring the fire under control.
Crews worked throughout the morning to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.
Local road closures remain in place as emergency services continue operations at the scene.
Despite the scale of the blaze, there have been no reports of injuries.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, with fire investigators expected to examine the scene throughout the day.
Emergency services are responding to a serious incident involving a truck and a pedestrian on Maitland Road at Sandgate, causing major traffic disruptions for motorists heading towards Newcastle.
The southbound (city-bound) lanes of Maitland Road have been closed while emergency crews work at the scene.
Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area where possible and seek alternative routes, with significant delays expected to continue throughout the response operation.
Motorists travelling through Sandgate should allow extra travel time and follow directions from emergency services and traffic controllers.
Further information is expected as the incident unfolds.
Police are appealing for public assistance as they continue the search for a 15-year-old girl reported missing from the Lake Macquarie area.
Taylah Douglas was last seen about 4am on Saturday, 23 May 2026, on Shelley Street at Toronto. Officers attached to NSW Police Force were notified of her disappearance and have since launched inquiries to establish her whereabouts.

Taylah is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 165cm tall, with a slim build and brown and red hair. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with writing on the front, black shorts, grey tracksuit pants and black sneakers.
She is known to frequent the areas of Dora Creek, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri.

A 30-year-old man has been charged following a series of alleged armed robberies and theft offences at businesses across Newcastle this month.
Police allege the incidents occurred between 13 and 23 May 2026, targeting retailers and restaurants in Newcastle West and Jesmond.
The first incident allegedly occurred about 5.40pm on 13 May when a man entered a shopping centre in Newcastle West and stole an electronic device without paying.
Three days later, about 8.20am on 16 May, police allege the same man returned to the shopping centre, produced a knife and threatened a shop assistant before stealing two electronic devices.
On 17 May, the man allegedly entered a restaurant on Hunter Street, Newcastle West, threatened staff with scissors and stole cash from the business.
Police further allege the man targeted a restaurant in Jesmond about 9.15pm on 22 May, demanding money from a staff member before fleeing with cash.
The final alleged robbery occurred about 11.10am on 23 May at a restaurant on Blue Gum Road, Jesmond, where the man allegedly threatened staff with a knife before stealing cash.
Following extensive investigations, officers arrested the 30-year-old man at a property on Blue Gum Road, Jesmond, about 7am today (Sunday, 24 May).
He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with:
The man was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Court Division 2 on Monday, 25 May 2026.

If anyone was looking for reassurance that our elected representatives understand the policies they're selling to voters, Dan Repacholi's appearance on the Incredible Lives With Cainey podcast was not it.
The interview should have been straightforward. Host Michael Cainey raised concerns about housing affordability, questioned whether limiting negative gearing would simply push up prices for new homes, and asked whether reducing taxes for younger Australians may have been a better approach.
Repacholi's response was startling.
"I'll be perfectly honest here, I'm not privileged to all of the doings in the budget area and the Treasury's Office."
Think about that for a moment. This wasn't an opposition MP being asked to explain somebody else's policy. This was a government MP being questioned about his own government's budget.
Instead of explaining the reasoning behind the policy, outlining the economic modelling, or defending the government's approach, Repacholi effectively told listeners he doesn't know the details because Treasury handles that.
That's not an answer. It's an admission.
The train wreck continued when Cainey pointed out the obvious reality facing many families across Newcastle and the Hunter: housing affordability is brutal. Asked whether the budget would genuinely improve the situation, Repacholi could offer little more than hope.
"I hope it does... only time will tell."
Hope is not a housing policy.
Australians are struggling with record house prices, soaring rents and a cost-of-living crisis. They deserve representatives who can explain why policies were chosen, what outcomes are expected and how success will be measured.
Instead, listeners were treated to vague assurances, deference to Treasury and repeated acknowledgements that the MP himself was not fully across the background details.
The most concerning part of the interview wasn't that Repacholi couldn't answer every question. No politician can. It was that he appeared unable to explain or defend the central economic decisions of the government he represents.
If MPs expect voters to trust them with solving Australia's housing crisis, "I don't know" and "I hope it works" simply aren't good enough.
About 10pm on Friday 22 May 2026, emergency services were called to a hotel on Port Stephens Street in Raymond Terrace following reports of a brawl.
Officers from the Port Stephens–Hunter Police District attended the scene, where they found multiple people involved in a physical altercation.

During the search, police allegedly seized several firearms, ammunition, prohibited weapons, literature, flags depicting hate symbols and other items of interest.
The man was arrested and taken to Gosford Police Station, where he was charged with a range of offences, including multiple counts of possessing prohibited weapons without a permit, possessing unregistered firearms, possessing shortened firearms without authority, failing to safely store firearms, importing prohibited goods, manufacturing a prohibited firearm without a licence, handling explosive precursors without authorisation and failing to maintain approved firearm storage.
Police will allege the man possessed multiple unregistered firearms, including prohibited firearms and pistols.

Investigations under Strike Force Nuvic remain ongoing.
