Man Granted Bail After Alleged Police Assault in Maitland
A 23-year-old man accused of violently assaulting a police officer in the Hunter Valley has been granted bail, despite strong backlash from the police community.
The incident allegedly occurred during a roadside stop in East Maitland, where police had pulled over a vehicle for random testing. Officers claim the driver refused a drug test and attempted to leave, leading to a confrontation with a senior constable.
Police allege the officer suffered multiple facial injuries during the altercation before a member of the public intervened. A taser was then deployed, and the man was arrested at the scene. (ABC News)
The man was charged with several offences, including assaulting a police officer and using a weapon to resist arrest. Although initially refused bail by police, he was later granted bail in court and is due to reappear later this month. (ABC News)
The decision has sparked outrage from the NSW Police Association, with concerns raised about the seriousness of the alleged attack. The state’s Police Minister has also condemned the incident as “vile and cowardly.” (ABC News)
