A critical incident investigation has been launched following the discovery of a man’s body at a unit in Newcastle’s coastal suburbs.

About 9.35am on Sunday 12 April 2026, emergency services were called to an address on Ocean Street in Merewether after reports of a concern for welfare. Officers were unable to gain contact with the occupant at the time.

Police from the Newcastle City Police District continued inquiries over the following days.

On Tuesday 14 April 2026, police reattended the property where they located a 46-year-old man deceased inside the unit.

A crime scene has been established, with the investigation now being led by a Critical Incident Team from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The matter will also be subject to review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
