Lake Macquarie is buzzing with excitement as four prized fish, worth a combined $100,000, await capture in this weekend’s Let’s Fish Lake Mac competition.
A flathead, tailor, bream, and whiting—each tagged with a $25,000 bounty—were stealthily released at secret lake locations earlier this week under the eye of event organiser Michael Guest.
The two-day catch-and-release showdown kicks off Saturday, with registered anglers vying for the big bucks as well as $34,000 in additional prizes across junior and open categories. Bonus awards include ‘mystery length’ payouts and epic gear packs.
“The fish are out there, ready and waiting,” Mr. Guest teased. “We’ve got perfect spring weather lined up—light winds, no rain, and plenty of action. It’s going to be an unforgettable weekend for every fisho in Lake Mac.”
To keep things sustainable, competitors must photograph their catch on an official measuring mat before safely returning the fish to the water. Only catches from the lake or its shores are eligible.
A Fishing Frenzy for All
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz says the event is more than a fishing comp—it’s a celebration of the community’s love for the lake.
“Growing up here, almost everyone has a memory of catching their first fish in Lake Macquarie,” Mayor Shultz said. “This weekend will create even more of those special moments while highlighting how beautiful and vibrant our region is.”
Inclusivity is a key focus this year, with Lake Macquarie’s new accessible fishing platform at Bolton Point set to welcome anglers of all abilities. Meanwhile, Day Trippin Charters will offer NDIS-friendly 90-minute fishing excursions, ensuring everyone has a chance to hook their dream catch.
Hook the Big One, But Keep It Alive!
For those lucky enough to snag one of the tagged fish, Mr. Guest had this critical advice: “Don’t remove the tag. Keep the fish alive, and call the hotline immediately.”
Entry to Let’s Fish Lake Mac is just $30, with lines officially cast from Saturday, November 23, through Sunday, November 24.
