Detectives from the Criminal Groups Squad have charged an inmate for his alleged involvement in a drug supply syndicate operating within a Hunter region correctional center.
The investigation, initiated by the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad in April 2023, focused on drug distribution through ‘dial-a-dealer’ phones across Sydney. Detectives uncovered a syndicate operating within the Cessnock correctional center, leading to the arrest of two men earlier this year. Earlier this month, four more individuals—two men and two women—were arrested, leaving all six facing court proceedings.
Yesterday, Wednesday 21 August 2024, Strike Force Wessex detectives arrested a 35-year-old inmate at the Cessnock facility and transported him to Newcastle Police Station. The inmate has been charged with participating in a criminal group, contributing to criminal activity, and two counts of supplying prohibited drugs.
The man was refused bail and appeared before Newcastle Local Court. Authorities allege that he received and distributed drugs during contact visits within the facility, with an estimated street value of $24,000.
Strike Force Wessex’s investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or visit Crime Stoppers NSW.
