Cessnock Mayor Daniel Watton has welcomed a historic $22.1 million federal government grant to fund the second stage of the Wollombi Road upgrade. The project will ensure the seamless continuation of work started in Stage 1, addressing major concerns about leaving the initial phase isolated without a clear path forward.
In a statement, Mayor Watton acknowledged his prior reservations about the project but emphasized his commitment to achieving the best outcomes for the region. “The Council has made its decision, and as Mayor, I intend to contribute constructively to ensure this project delivers maximum benefit to our community,” he said.

The funding represents one of the largest grants ever awarded for a single project in the Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA). Mayor Watton highlighted the broader impact of his independent leadership, pointing to record-breaking funding commitments across the LGA since his election, including:
- $3 million from the federal government for the Weston Bears
- $22 Million Stage 2 Wollombi Rd Upgrade
- Approximately $1 million for Sawyers Gully Road upgrades
- A $14 million project, details of which are currently under embargo
“These record spends demonstrate the benefits of having an independent mayor willing to work with all political parties to deliver for the Cessnock community,” Watton said. “I said it all during my campaign—swinging seats matter, and independent ones even more so.”
Mayor Watton remains optimistic about ongoing funding opportunities and looks forward to meeting with federal candidates ahead of the upcoming election to secure further financial commitments for the rapidly growing LGA.
