The Hunter Joint Organisation is thrilled to announce a landmark renewable electricity supply agreement with Iberdrola Australia, secured by four of its member councils: Maitland City Council, MidCoast Council, Muswellbrook Shire Council, and Upper Hunter Shire Council. This agreement, which extends through to the end of 2030, is part of a broader Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) involving nine other regional councils across New South Wales.
Under the deal, the councils will receive a long-term, renewable electricity supply for their large sites and street lighting.
Key Highlights:
- Renewable Energy: Maitland, MidCoast, and Muswellbrook councils have committed to 100% renewable energy, while Upper Hunter Shire will source 30% of its energy renewably. Together, the councils will prevent an estimated 99,400 tonnes of CO2-e over the duration of the agreement.
- Cost Savings: By joining forces, the councils have secured a competitive electricity price, collectively saving around $2 million compared to 2024 costs and shielding themselves from future energy price increases.
- Boosting the Regional Economy: The renewable energy will be sourced from several NSW-based projects, helping to stimulate the local economy and support the growth of the renewable energy sector.
This initiative, coordinated by the Hunter Joint Organisation and Mid North Coast Joint Organisation with advisors Sourced Energy Pty Ltd, Regional Procurement, Procure Group Pty Ltd, and Baker Mackenzie, has also received financial backing from the NSW Government.
