A 42-year-old man is set to appear in Newcastle Local Court today following his arrest for alleged traffic, drug, and weapons offences.
Police from Newcastle City Police District attempted to stop a vehicle, reportedly stolen from a Merewether address, on Union Street, The Junction, around 2 PM on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. When the driver allegedly failed to comply, a pursuit ensued.
The chase ended on Henry Street, Merewether, where the man abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers apprehended him shortly after. During a search, police reportedly seized methamphetamine.
The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with multiple offences, including:
- Take and drive conveyance without consent of the owner
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly
- Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period
He was also charged in relation to earlier alleged offences, including:
- Two counts of possess prohibited drug
- Supply prohibited drug (greater than indictable and less than commercial quantities)
- Possess or use prohibited weapon without a permit
- Use prohibited weapon contrary to prohibition order
The man was refused bail and will face court today.
