A 24-year-old woman has been charged with an additional offence after the death of an elderly man who was critically injured in an alleged assault in Wallsend last month.
Emergency services were called to Raglan Street, Wallsend, around 12:55 pm on Sunday, 10 November 2024, following reports of an assault. Police allege the woman struck an 81-year-old man with an object, causing him to fall onto the road.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to John Hunter Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on Sunday, 24 November 2024.
The woman fled the scene before police arrived. A search for her began under Strike Force Pinnaroo, leading detectives to execute a search warrant at a Raglan Street unit around 3:00 pm on Monday, 11 November 2024.
Police seized clothing and a ream of paper believed to be connected to the incident. The woman was arrested and initially charged with reckless grievous bodily harm.
Following the elderly man’s death, the woman now faces an upgraded charge of assault occasioning death. She remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, 29 January 2024.
