Bus Driver Charged in Fatal Hunter Valley Crash Breaks Silence

News Update: Bus Driver Charged in Fatal Hunter Valley Crash Expresses Apology to Victims and Families

The bus driver implicated in the tragic crash that claimed ten lives in the New South Wales Hunter Valley last June has offered his heartfelt apologies to the victims and their bereaved families.

The fatal incident occurred on June 11, 2023, when a coach transporting 35 passengers from a nearby wedding overturned on a roundabout near Greta, resulting in ten fatalities and leaving another 25 individuals injured.

Brett Andrew Button, the driver facing 89 charges in connection to the crash, appeared outside Newcastle Local Court today, accompanied by his lawyer, Chris O’Brien. In a statement read on behalf of Mr. Button, he expressed profound devastation over the tragic events and extended his sincere apologies to all those affected, including the victims’ families and emergency service personnel.

“There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about what happened that day, that night,” Mr. Button’s statement conveyed. “There isn’t an hour that goes by, where I’m not thinking of the families. I truly feel for anyone involved, including emergency services. I am devastated by what has occurred and for that I’m truly and deeply sorry.”

Emotionally overcome, the 59-year-old driver fought back tears as the statement was delivered.

The case has been adjourned until April to allow for further discussions between the Director of Public Prosecutions and the defence. No pleas were entered during today’s proceedings.

It’s alleged that Mr. Button lost control of the bus, which was ferrying guests from the Wandin Valley Estate to Singleton. The vehicle rolled near Greta and skidded along a guard rail.
