Cessnock Council is set to vote on a new $500,000 proposal aimed at addressing the issues of the original $1.9 million Cooper Street upgrade. The revised plan proposes converting the section of Cooper Street between Vincent Street and Charlton Street into a one-way street, accessible only from Vincent Street. This change also includes the addition of more parking spaces.
The proposal involves removing the current tiled area and laying down a road base. The roundabout will be removed, with no turn into Charlton Street from Cooper Street heading towards Hall Street. As a result, access to the Coles and Charlton Street car parks will have to be made via Hall Street. Charlton Street will be two-way from Hall Street to the Coles entrance but will be one-way between the Coles entrance and Cooper St.
The decision was deferred at the last council meeting to allow councillors to have a further briefing and discuss other options.
