Singleton’s very own Genevieve Janse van Rensburg will represent the Hunter electorate and Australia in the Modern Pentathlon at the Olympics tonight. Her competition kicks off at approximately 10:30 PM.
The Modern Pentathlon is a challenging, multi-disciplinary event that tests athletes across five sports in a single day. Competitors will face off in a round-robin fencing match, swim 200 meters in seeded heats, and take on a show jumping course with a horse they’ve only met 20 minutes prior.
The day culminates with the thrilling combined run/shoot event. Athletes start with a handicap based on their scores from the earlier events. They will run a short distance to the firing range, shoot at targets, and alternate between running and shooting three times before a final 1,000-meter sprint to the finish line.
