Council’s granted more power to deal with unattended property

Maitland City Council’s Deputy Mayor Mitchell Giffin and Cr Sally Halliday have been advicating changes to NSW laws to deal with abandoned property including cars in a timely manner.

Following a successful motion from Maitland City Council at the Local Government NSW Annual Conference earlier this week the new Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021 will come in to effect from Tuesday November 1st.

This change to the law will mean that councils can deal with unattended property sooner such as vehicles, shopping trolleys and animals.

There will be an initial grace period where warnings instead of fines will apply until 1 May 2023.
