Crime Rates in Hunter Region: Muswellbrook Tops the List, Gloucester at the Bottom.

Ranked by their rate of recorded crime per 100,000 population in the 24 months to June 2021, from highest to lowest:

  1. Muswellbrook – 12,271.3
  2. Cessnock – 8,162.6
  3. Singleton – 7,655.5
  4. Lake Macquarie – 7,256.5
  5. Maitland – 6,703.9
  6. Port Stephens – 6,645.4
  7. Newcastle – 5,799.5
  8. Dungog – 4,792.7
  9. Upper Hunter – 4,279.8
  10. Gloucester – 3,747.7

According to the latest data from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR), the local government area (LGA) of Muswellbrook had the highest rate of recorded crime per 100,000 population in the Hunter region of New South Wales. Muswellbrook recorded a rate of 12,271.3 in the 24 months to June 2021, making it the most crime-prone LGA in the region.

Cessnock and Singleton followed closely behind, with rates of 8,162.6 and 7,655.5, respectively. These LGAs were followed by Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens, Newcastle, Dungog, Upper Hunter, and Gloucester, which had the lowest rate of recorded crime at 3,747.7.

The BOCSAR report also showed that the most common crimes committed in the Hunter region were theft, assault, and malicious damage to property. Drug offences and fraud were also prevalent in some areas.

Despite the high crime rates in some areas, the Hunter region remains a popular destination for tourists and residents alike, with its natural beauty, cultural attractions, and thriving communities. Efforts to reduce crime and improve safety are ongoing, and local leaders are optimistic that progress can be made in the coming years.
