Driver refused bail following Mayfield hit-and-run investigation

A man has been charged in connection with a two-car crash that occurred in Mayfield last week. The incident took place at around 9 am on Thursday, April 20, 2023, on Wye Street. Police were alerted to the collision and rushed to the scene.

Upon arriving, they discovered that a sedan and an SUV had collided. The driver and passenger of the sedan had reportedly fled the scene. However, the driver of the SUV, a 54-year-old woman, was able to exit the vehicle with minor injuries. She was taken to John Hunter Hospital as a precaution.

During a search of the sedan, the police discovered a replica firearm, several knives, number plates, and credit cards that were suspected to have been stolen. Later in the day, police officers from Newcastle City Police District arrived at an address on Hanbury Street, Mayfield, where they apprehended an 18-year-old woman.

The woman was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with two counts of possessing prohibited drugs. She was released on conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court on May 11, 2023.

On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, police officers from Newcastle City Police District returned to Hanbury Street and arrested a 31-year-old man. The man is alleged to have been driving the sedan during the crash. He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with several offenses, including driving conveyance taken without the owner’s consent, dishonestly obtaining property by deception, possessing an unauthorized pistol, possessing goods in personal custody suspected to be stolen, and receiving stolen property.

The man appeared before Newcastle Local Court on the same day and was refused bail. He is expected to appear before the court again on June 8, 2023.
