In a shocking incident this week, a man is set to appear in court today, facing charges related to a horrific incident in Newcastle. On Thursday, September 28, 2023, at approximately 3:20 AM, emergency services rushed to a King Street fast-food restaurant following reports of a man engulfed in flames, suffering severe burns.
Newcastle City Police District has launched a thorough investigation into reports suggesting that the victim, a 23-year-old man, was not only assaulted but also intentionally set on fire. The victim was immediately transported to John Hunter Hospital, later transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he currently remains in a serious yet stable condition.
Detectives have initiated a targeted investigation under “Strike Force Droney” to bring the perpetrators to justice. As part of their inquiries, a 20-year-old man was apprehended after voluntarily presenting himself at Raymond Terrace Police Station at approximately 5 PM on Friday, September 29, 2023.
The suspect now faces serious charges, including “throw/lay down explosive etc with intent to maim/do grievous bodily harm” and “cause grievous bodily harm to a person with intent.” He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Local Court today, Saturday, September 30, 2023.
