Horror Crash in Newcastle: Two Dead, Two Injured After Car Bursts Into Flames
A late-night crash in Newcastle’s north-west has ended in tragedy, with two men dead and two others injured after their car smashed into a power pole and erupted in flames.
Emergency crews were called to Maitland Road, Mayfield East, just after 11pm on Saturday when a maroon Toyota Corolla left the road and caught fire on impact.
Passers-by pulled the 24-year-old driver and a 19-year-old passenger to safety, but two others were trapped inside the burning wreck. Firefighters managed to free them, but both later died in hospital from critical burns.
All four men are understood to be Bangladeshi students living in Australia. Police are liaising with the Bangladeshi High Commission as investigations continue.
The driver remains under police guard in hospital with minor injuries. The surviving passenger is also receiving treatment.
Police are urging witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
