Former Maitland Mayor Experiences Meltdown over Proposed Natural Stance on Voice to Parliament
Maitland City Council’s decision to maintain a natural stance on the forthcoming referendum regarding the Voice to Parliament has sparked controversy. While several Labor councils have chosen to support and advocate for the “yes” campaign, former Mayor Baker reacted with an intense meltdown, expressing her opposition to the natural position and vowing to leverage her position to promote the “yes” campaign.
During a Council meeting, Deputy Mayor Mitchell Griffin, affiliated with the Liberal Party, presented a motion that Mayor Baker vehemently opposed. In her impassioned response, Mayor Baker stated, “It’s possibly even racism. It’s grubby, and you won’t take me to the gutter with you.” She also claimed that adopting a natural position would impede both the “yes” and “no” campaigns from renting council venues.
Deputy Mayor Mitchell Griffin has dismissed Mayor Baker’s assertions, labeling them as misleading and misinformation. He called for an apology from Councillor Baker for her comments.
