Cessnock, NSW – Former Mayor Jay Suvaal has officially resigned from his role as a Councillor on Cessnock City Council, citing increased professional and family responsibilities.
In a statement shared online, Suvaal said the decision was made after “careful consideration and conversations with my family, friends, employer and fellow Councillors.” He recently accepted a new professional opportunity that requires more time away from home and, coupled with growing family care needs, Suvaal said he could no longer commit fully to the duties of a Councillor.
“As a husband and father of two young children, family must always come first,” he said.
Suvaal served on the Council for eight years, including nearly three years as Mayor. He reflected on his tenure with pride, noting major achievements in infrastructure, including a record $67 million capital works program delivered in his final year as Mayor.
“We improved and rebuilt local roads, upgraded parks, built new BMX and skate facilities, and developed new shared pathways to better link our community,” Suvaal said. “Serving our community has been one of the greatest honours of my life.”
He also praised the work of Council staff, particularly General Manager Ken Liddell, for their commitment to the city.
The NSW Electoral Commission is expected to fill the vacant Ward A seat through a recount. The most likely replacement is former Deputy Mayor James Hawkins, a seasoned councillor with three previous terms of service.
Suvaal concluded his statement by thanking the Cessnock community and expressing confidence in the current Council leadership, especially Deputy Mayor Mitchell Hill and the Labor team, to continue delivering for local residents.
“I will always continue to be a strong advocate for the Cessnock community in whatever role I can,” Suvaal said.
