Emergency services responded to a head-on collision between two vehicles on The Great North Road at Wollombi at approximately 5:48 pm on March 10th, 2023. Upon arrival, the NSW Ambulance team was already treating the casualties. However, one person remained trapped in one of the vehicles, and VRA Rescue NSW was activated to help.
VRA Rescue NSW crews worked to stabilize the trapped individual’s vehicle before commencing the extrication process. The woman’s foot was trapped, and it was unclear how severe the injury was until the door was removed, allowing greater access. The team prepared to perform a dash push, but the hydraulic pedal cutter was the most suitable tool for the job due to the confined space.
Within seconds of the cutter being used, the woman’s foot was freed, and she was carefully removed from the vehicle using a slide board. She was then transported to the waiting ambulance, where she was transferred to the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter and taken to the hospital.
The incident involved several emergency services, including VRA Rescue NSW, NSW Police Force, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Wollombi RFS, Laguna RFS, and Millfield RFS. The persons in the dual cab utility escaped relatively unharmed, and the team from NSW Ambulance did an excellent job treating the casualties.
The coordinated effort from all emergency services on the scene allowed for a successful rescue operation, and the woman’s prompt transportation to the hospital for further treatment was made possible.
