Newcastle City Police say the former hotel is totally destroyed. Emergency crews responded after reports of an explosion at the former hotel. Upon arrival the hotel was well alight.
Residents from the Civic square apartments have been evacuated they will not be allowed back in for at least three hours. There are no injuries.
