A 32-year-old man has been hit with a massive fine and an immediate licence suspension after being caught driving at more than 75 km/h over the speed limit in Gateshead.
About 10:10am on Thursday, 30 October 2025, officers attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were conducting speed enforcement duties on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Gateshead as part of Operation Shore Safe.
Police detected a black Lexus travelling at 142 km/h in the 90 km/h zone. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated further, reaching speeds of up to 166 km/h.
The man was issued a $3,054 fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h. His licence was immediately suspended for six months.
